Standard clean vs. deep clean: which one do you need?

"Do I need a deep clean?" is one of the most common questions people have about house cleaning. The short answer: if it's your first professional clean, or it's been more than a month or two since a thorough one, probably yes. After that, a standard clean is usually all you need. Here's the difference.

What a standard clean covers

A standard clean is maintenance. It keeps a home that's already in decent shape looking and feeling clean:

  • Kitchen counters, sink and appliance fronts
  • Bathrooms: toilet, tub, shower, sink and mirrors
  • Dusting of reachable surfaces
  • Floors vacuumed and mopped
  • Trash emptied and every room reset

What a deep clean adds

A deep clean includes everything above, plus the spots that build up slowly and get skipped in a regular routine:

  • Baseboards, doors and trim
  • Inside the microwave, oven and fridge
  • Built-up grime and soap scum in kitchens and bathrooms
  • Window sills, blinds and vents

Because there's more to do, a deep clean takes noticeably longer and costs more. For a 2-bedroom home, it starts around $250, compared with $165 for a standard clean.

When to choose a deep clean

  • It's your first time with a cleaning service
  • It's been a while since your home had a thorough clean
  • You're getting ready for guests, a holiday or a big event
  • Seasonal resets, like spring cleaning

When a standard clean is enough

If your home is cleaned regularly, a standard clean keeps it there. That's why many people start with one deep clean, then switch to standard cleans every week or two. Recurring cleans also come with a discount of up to 15% per visit.
